Paragraphing in Academic Writing

Paragraphs in academic writing often serve as microcosms for the features needed throughout a research writing project.  Although styles may vary by discipline, this module will help you identify and apply the three most characteristic elements:  unity, development, and logical coherence.
By the conclusion of this learning module, the user will be able to complete the following module-level learning objectives:
  1. Demonstrate the structure and function of paragraphing in academic writing
  2. Identify paragraph, unity, development and coherence

These module level objectives will contribute to meeting the following course-level objectives: 

  • Apply compositional principles and syntactical, lexical and stylistic conventions of American English to academic writing
  • Communicate research findings and original ideas in clear, logical, and academic writing

 

APA Style Defined: 

APA (American Psychological Association) style is most frequently used within the social sciences, in order to cite various sources. This APA Citation Guide, revised according to the 6th edition of the APA manual, provides the general format for in-text citations and the reference page. (American Psychological Association, 2016)
